~October 20
For our fishermen, the walleyes have been cooperating nicely on Pelican, Serpent and Rabbit. On Rabbit and Serpent, chartreuse jigs tipped with a redtail, shiner or a fathead fished in 22-24 FOW has been productive in the evening hours. There have also been a few “fall giants” pulled from both of these lakes along with the typical eaters. On Pelican, redtails on a pink/white jig or black/chartreuse jig has been king. If there is a good wind, fish the windy side of Rifle Site in 20-24 FOW, and if the wind isn’t blowing look for the big schools of ‘eyes chasing baitfish in 35-45 FOW throughout the day, with action peaking the last hour of daylight. Panfish reports are very limited, but the few that are chasing ‘gills and crappies are reporting some success. Some brookies are being caught cruising the shorelines now and we expect great action in the pits right up til season close on Halloween.
Hunting in the area is good in general, with duck hunters having some success shooting a mix of mallards, ringnecks and even a few woodies still. Grouse hunters have done well especially now that the leaves are down, flushing plenty of birds in our area. Archers are still registering a few deer, and deer activity has really picked up the last week here; everyone is seeing deer! Lots of geese in the area still, offering our waterfowlers a nice bonus while in the swamp.

October 5 - Walleyes have taken the top-stage now that fall is really here. West Rabbit and the Deerwood end of Serpent have both produced some fish this week in the deep water surrounding mid-lake rock piles. Jigs and redtails, an obvious fall favorite, has yet again been the ticket. Crankbaits have been producing some decent results after dark on North Long and Pelican in the shallow sand, and Pelican has been producing lots of “eater” fish on rigs or jigs in the low-light periods of the day in 24-28 FOW.
The crappie bite in the area has been good, although there are very few anglers targeting them. Look to the deeper water, 20-27’, for some of the bigger fish. Some nice bluegills are showing up on the Crosby end of Serpent in what is left of the cabbage weeds. A small hair jig or plastics worked slowly in this area will produce some nice fish around sunset.
Bass anglers are starting to put their gear away with the colder temps, although bass continue to bite well on lighter, finesse style setups. Lots of pike being caught, primarily by walleye anglers. For the best results, throw a medium sized spoon or spinnerbait, tip with a small sucker and work extremely slow in the shallow, dark bottom bays.
Trout action in the pits continues to get better, with the bigger brookies starting to show up along the flooded timber staging before heading shallow. Look for some more cold nights to really get the brookies going strong.

Crappies and bluegills are being caught on Black Hoof, Mahnomen, Nokay and Cedar in 14-16 FOW during the day, while in the evenings 8-12 has been better. There are also some nice bluegills being caught on Rabbit in 21-24 FOW on crawlers. The Mississippi continues to produce walleyes and smallmouth throughout the day in the deeper pools north of the shop as well as the stretch between Little Rabbit Lake and Half Moon Lake west of town. For walleyes on the lakes, Rabbit has started to produce some fish as has Serpent in the evenings in 18-22 FOW around rocks or deep weeds. Pelican continues to have a night-bite for ‘eyes in 6-8 FOW on shallow running crankbaits or leeches under a slip-bobber.
Bass action has slowed somewhat, although where the bass left off the pike picked up even more. Jigs tipped with a plastic or a minnow along the weed edges will produce plenty of pike action on Serpent and Clearwater, as well as the occasional bass.
Trout action remains slow but will pick up in the next few weeks with the colder nights cooling the surface temp. The few musky reports coming from Cedar indicate a slow bite that should pick up as well as fall progresses.

8/3/2008- Walleye fishing has been slow in general although there are a few being caught right at dark on Rabbit and Pelican on cranks. There are also a few fish being caught by pike/bass anglers along the weeds on area lakes. The great bass bite we have been having is holding, and the majority of the fish being caught are schooled up along the deep edge of the weeds in 15-18 FOW on Serpent, West Rabbit, Clearwater, Lower Mission and Horseshoe lakes. Pike activity has been good as well, in many of the same areas. Panfish reports around the area are pretty good still, evenings in particular have been productive on Serpent, Mahnomen and Ross in 10-14 FOW on Puddle Jumpers, Pegleg jigs and Flu Flus tipped with a minnow or worm.

Trout action has been so-so, with the shore fishermen still getting some limits early in the A.M. with Powerbait and crawlers. Downrigging from a boat can be productive on Pennington and Huntington, although the depth of where the fish are located varies somewhat.

Musky reports have slowed from Cedar, and most of the action is taking place after dark on surface lures.

From Brad Durick: Grand Forks, ND

August 2, 2008-  The Red River at Grand Forks is up about a foot after a heavy rain last week.  This new drink of fresh water is really getting the catfish moving.  The fish are now activly feeding along the break lines and troughs in the faster current.  They have the feed bags on and are thinking of only one thing.  EATING.  Cut suckers have been the bait of choice with goldeye and frog being nearly useless right now.  smaller fish but large numbers are coming in shallow water and the hawgs are moving in the deeper fast water.
